When Do You Need an Architect?

In Ontario and Québec, an architect is legally required when your project:

  • Is over 600m2 in building area

  • Is over 3 storeys high

  • Contains an Assembly Occupancy

Putting the regulatory requirements aside, it would generally be advised to work with an architect if:

  • Your project is complex and will require a multidisciplinary team of experts

  • You care about design and seek elevated aesthetics

  • Your budget is modest but your project is ambitious

  • Your project requires a minor variance or rezoning in order to proceed
